St Catherine of Alexandria (287-305 CE) was executed as a heretic by the Roman Emperor, Maxentius. I dream about her and a later St Catherine, the Mohawk woman, Kateri Tekakwitha (1656-1680). Both women were subjected to the violence and violation of imperial, military systems. The dream transcends the brutality that has been inflicted on women over history. The song calls to a freedom in which we all can share.

Last night I dreamed,
I was St Catherine in chains,
They cut my hair,
And they led me to my grave.
And I dreamed,
That my spirit was released,
From the earth,
Where I fell down on my knees—
In my dreams.

And then I dreamed,
That they took away my name,
Set me alone,
In the prism of my shame.
And I dreamed that my spirit was set free,
Shining out,
Through the darkness of history—
In my dreams.

And so, who do you call to?
Who do you call to?
When you’re alone.

One day I’ll dream,
I can break these prison chains,
And we will walk,
In the sunshine and light again,
And breathe the air of a freedom that we’ll dream,
In ten billion tears,
That were born of St Catherine—
In my dreams.

And so—
Who do you dream of?
Who shares your freedom?
Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!
